"JQJ213- Now With An Extra Cylinder!" (jqj213)

Every month up at the local drag strip (about a 30 minute drive) they have an open quarter mile night. I want to take my 13 Civic and go race. I want to know what my car is capable of legally. Is this a bad idea?

Good way to kill some time on a Saturday. Won't get you in trouble. I see no downside to this. Dooo it.

I used to do that. Cheap fun and you will probably get into an elimination class you can actually have a chance of winning in. Do It.

Not at all, it's much, much smarter than street racing. If you want to try it just do it.

The only real way to damage you car, aside from hitting the wall or over-revving (i.e. missing a shift), is through driveline breakage. All good drag strips are prepared with VHT, a traction compound that in a way helps stabilize the surface, giving rubber a better surface to adhere to. As you might be able to guess, breakage comes from having an engine on one side trying to move everything and tires on the other side having lots of traction with very little chance of slip (for a road car, anyways). If you're launching at redline and dump the clutch, the torque shock very likely could twist and destroy a half-shaft, spindle, anything that isn't up to the task at hand. But never fear! You don't have to have a John Force reaction time to know how fast your car is; the total Elapsed Time and Top-End Speed measurements are only from when you leave the start line to when you cross the finish, it does not factor in reaction time at all. This means that you could leave in the same way you would leave a stop light if you were in a hurry, giving you a good indication of vehicle performance without the massive shock loads to the driveline.
So tl;dr version: don't do a Neutral Drop and your car should be fine.
